Bob Evans over at the Cobblestone Gallery has put together a great collection of jewelery, pottery and other arts and crafts of the finest quality. He prides himself on building a relationship with unique and talented Canadian artists, and has an outstanding and varied collection. It's a must stop shopping destination if you're looking gifts.
At one time Bob even had wall art made out of recycled computer parts.

Freecycle Midwestern Ontario... give and get free stuff
Submitted by michael on Mon, 2006-11-20 21:55.I've written about Freecycle in at least one column in the past, and I've both given away and received items. It's a great way to give to the community and keep items out of the landfill.
Check out the Freecycle home page at:
... and our local group at:

Update 2007/07/23: The Freecycle Midwestern Ontario group has been renamed to "Full Circles Kitchener Waterloo". The new URL is:

For more details about the name change and why it happened, members of the group that missed it should read the message "Admin - First Response to New Name", and any of the many responses after that.
University of Waterloo Surplus Sale

Affectionately know as "The Junk Sale", you are sure to find the unexpected at the University of Waterloo Surplus Sale. From laptops to exercise equipment, furniture to computers, cell phones to bicycles... this sale has quite the selection, stocked for the most part by asset disposal at the university (and some "lost and found" items too, I'm guessing). They usually have a supply of computers such as Wintel type PCs, Macintosh and even some SUN Solaris hardware, and they almost always have printers, modems, video cards, monitors, hard drives and other electronic bits and pieces. I've seen microscopes, blackboards, jewelery and have even heard tell of someone buying parts for a polygraph machine.
Prices are a steal, are labelled including the tax and are conveniently calculated to come out to even dollar amounts. They only accept cash and cheques (no electronic processing of debit or credit cards), and they won't offer you a refund or return, so it's "buyer beware".
Attending the sale which is held on a semi-regular basis (usually twice a month), is a real event that you have to experience yourself. The lineup commonly extends out to the street by the time the doors open, and then it's a mad rush for the "good stuff"... a bit of shoulder to shoulder action (like being at a dance busy club), and a slow trickle of happy shoppers carrying and wheeling away their purchases.
Some etiquette for attending the sale:
- Never "bud" into the line up at the register.
- Don't stand in one place too long... that is, be mindful of people who are "cruising" to find what they're after.
- When Dave (a regular at the sale) bumps into you or asks you what he's holding in his own hands, don't freak out. He's not being inconsiderate. You wouldn't know it at first, but Dave is blind (even though I think he "sees" more things in this world than I can).

The junk sale is a must if you are "computer mechanic" trying to keep an old PC running, a student looking to furnish your off-campus room, or anyone looking for a bargain and wanting to be part of the experience.
Good Guyz Garage... they really are good guys.

If you are searching for a mechanic in Waterloo, I whole-heartedly recommend Good Guyz Garage. I've been taking my Ford cars there since 1995 (back when they were Van Holst Automotive) and they have never done me wrong. Lony, Tony, Daryll and Elias are honest and will give you the best advice you can get for keeping older cars safe on the road. If you drop by the garage, tell them that Michael sent you :)

Some history. Lony and Tony worked for Van Holst Automotive. When Harv decided to do some missionary work, he sold the business to "the guys" and they have since moved to a larger shop where they can grow their business and better serve their customers. Harv is back in business now. He's a good guy too!
